In a recent update, the Novato Unified School District has narrowed its search to two priority sites for future workforce housing developments. As reported by Keri Brenner in the Marin Independent Journal, the district is now focusing on the Meadow Park Annex in Hamilton and the San Andreas property in the San Marin neighborhood.
Both sites, consisting of vacant district- or city-owned land, could accommodate over 200 units of affordable housing for teachers, school staff, and other essential community workers. This selection marks a significant step forward in addressing Marin’s shortage of workforce housing, which continues to impact recruitment and retention in public education.
Brenner writes:
“Both locations are on district or city-owned vacant land and were on a list of six properties under consideration. The two sites recently emerged as the most likely to meet the district’s needs of supplying more than 200 affordable residences for staff.”
This approach exemplifies a community-first mindset, similar to land trust strategies, where public resources are aligned to create long-term housing affordability. By prioritizing land already held in public ownership, the district is taking a proactive stance in ensuring that housing remains accessible for those who serve the community.
